Passive Voice Vs Active Voice

Passive Voice definition

The passive voice form is attained by using verb to be in a given tense or that of an active voice sentence and the past participle of the main verb. Hence, the subject of the active sentence turns out to be or the object. Also, the subject is not often mentioned in passive voice. If it is mentioned, it is used with by which precedes it at the end of the sentence .

Active: My grandfather planted this tree.

Passive: This tree was planted by my grandfather.

Passive voice uses:

There are many situations in which the passive voice becomes a necessity to use such as:

  1. If the subject or agent is unknown

For example:

The door was left open

In this example the person who opened the door in not known therefore we have used the passive voice

  • When the subject is not really important or predictable

For example:

English is spoken by Millions

Here, we don’t need to say Millions of people speak English because it’s known

  • To give more emphasis to a result

The vase was broken

We are more interested in the result not the agent

Two objects sentences in passive voice

Some English verbs take two objects when used in sentences including: buy, give, lend…etc, therefore the passive form of such sentences can be possible in two different ways.

a. The first object is called indirect object is the one which often used as the subject in passive voice.

I was given a gift

b. The second object or as referred to as the direct object can also be used as the subject in the passive form

A gift was given to me Rick gave me (indirect object) this book (direct object).

I was given this book by Rick.

    2. George showed me (indirect object) some photos(direct object)

  Some photos were shown to me by George.

        I was shown some photos by George.
